Amitriptyline hydrochloride is a heterocyclic antidepressant. Amitriptyline is used primarily to treat major depression (both psychotic and endogenous), especially depression associated with a sleep disturbance. Because of its sedative effects, it may be useful in treating anxiety associated with depression.
